Lena Mae Henderson (nee Ballard), 101, of Fairview Heights, Illinois, born, April 26, 1916, passed away, Friday, June 9, 2017 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Illinois.

Lena was truly a jewel to all who knew and loved her. She possessed a charismatic personality and a loving spirit. She married the love of her life, John M. Henderson and to this union brought four children. Lena Mae Henderson (nee Ballard), 101, of Fairview Heights, Illinois, born, April 26, 1916, passed away, Friday, June 9, 2017 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Illinois.

Lena was truly a jewel to all who knew and loved her. She possessed a charismatic personality and a loving spirit. She married the love of her life, John M. Henderson and to this union brought four children. In her earlier years, starting at the age of 15, she worked diligently at various locations, such as Dickersons, Aldens, Darling Shop and Scott Airforce Base. She retired from working as a medical clerk. Lena loved music and participating in various church activities.

She was a woman of faith having served as a faithful member at First Baptist Church of Fairview Heights. It was originally Unity Roselawn Baptist Church of Fairview Heights, Illinois, which was pastored by her father, Henry Ballard. Lena sang in the church choir and also served as the financial secretary at Unity Roselawn. Her most precious memories were those spent with her family and friends. She was a loving mom, grandma, great grandma, great-great grandma, sister and friend. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Melvin "Mel" Henderson; her daughter, JoAnn Simons; her brothers, Otha Ballard and Daniel Ballard; her sisters, Nina Ballard, Ruby Ballard, Edna Good and Verda Piquard.

Surviving are her loving children; Delbert (Pat) Henderson Sr, of Troy, IL, Joyce (Clifford) Caldwell, of Deerfield Beach, FL and Douglas (Deborah) Henderson, of Kimberling City, MO; a son-in-law, Bob Simons, of Louisiana; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; her siblings, Vern Ballard, John Ballard, Ray Ballard, Bernetha Francis and Henrietta Newbold and a dear number of nieces, nephews, family members and dear friends.

Visitation: Friends and family may visit from 2pm to 6 pm, Sunday, June 18, 2017 at First Baptist Church located at 10401 Lincoln Trail, Fairview Heights, Illinois 62208.

Funeral Service: All funeral services will be held the following day at 10am at First Baptist Church, with Rev Vern Ballard and Dr. Rev Jim Kerr officiating, Interment will follow immediately after services at Lake View Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Fairview Heights, Illinois.
